Hi everyone! Happy New Year!
Hoping your Christmas was as sweet as a freshly baked cherry pie! Today, I wanted to share a few of my highlights this past Christmas.
As most of you know, I am Cuban, and like a good Cuban, we celebrate Noche Buena the night before Christmas with Lechón azado in the caja chica, arroz moro, sweet plantains, yuca con mojo & every carb under the sun you can think of. And to be perfectly honest, I had seconds… Maybe thirds. I’ll never tell.
Every year, it is our tradition to celebrate the season at my brother & sister-in-law’s house, where the whole family gathers for a delicious homemade meal, followed by a mouth-watering variety of freshly baked sweets. In 2016, my SIL (Luli) and I thought it would be so fun to theme the dinner and so, for that year, everyone came with ugly Christmas sweaters. For 2017, it was the #BravosMad4Plaid theme, which was absolutely fabulous. I think we should really stick to that theme every year. Everyone looked great!!
This past December, however, we put a fun spin on Christmas Eve and hosted, for the very first time, a white elephant game after dinner. In the past years, we would exchange gifts on the 25th and last year, we did a family Secret Santa, but this year, we had a little more fun with the White Elephant Game. There were shady moments of tension because, of course, there are always THOSE gifts that EVERYONE wants and it was quite the battle! My mom, my aunt and I teamed up like a Christmas Mafia and stole gifts from each other and others, in order to get some of the gifts we wanted. But, that’s the name of the game! I’m sure next year there will be a revolt and everyone will start teaming up lol!! Can’t wait!
Joey & I began our own little Christmas tradition in 2016 by hosting our very first Christmas brunch at our first home together. In 2017, we had the family come over between 11:30 am & 1 PM and we made homemade waffles, croissants, bagels, doughnuts, pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, mimosas, coffee- the works! It was fun opening gifts with the kids while everyone sat around in their Christmas pajamas. Truly, a moment I will soon not forget. I am certainly looking forward to our 2018 Christmas brunch and wondering how much more wonderful it will be then. Perhaps our biggest gift is yet to come…
I am excited to share a few of our intimate family moments with you all in hopes that it continues to bring a smile to your face and perhaps even inspire you to create some new Holiday traditions of your own!
Merriest Ever-After to you all!
